Navigating Work Attire

Happy Halloween Badgers! It's the spookiest time of the year, and we at CareerZone are here to help you navigate something that is quite scary... your career! Do not fret, however, as your Career Navigators are here to make the journey less spooky.

While dressing up in costumes can be fun, dressing for work is a different thing entirely. It can be confusing, but we hope to make the process easier! Here are some of our top tips for dressing for work in a Canadian context:

1. Dress for the job you want, not the job you have

While daily work activities typically call for more of a business casual look, it can be helpful to dress your look up a bit when it comes to interviews and the first day of work. For these instances we typically recommend business professional attire in order to really woo your future employer.

2. Keep it simple!

In both business professional and business casual dress codes, it’s typically best to stick to uncomplicated, simple, professional attire rather than vibrant colours or patterns. Simple jewelry and makeup with clean and neat hair are suggested as well. Although clown makeup is fun for Halloween, it is definitely not recommended for professional settings.

3. Avoid logos or risky clothing

A workplace is usually not the time or place to flaunt designer clothes or take major fashion risks. When in doubt, it’s best to play it safe and keep your outfit conservative with workplace-appropriate clothes.

4. Dress it up a little!

Though it can be tough to figure out what is ‘dressy’ enough for work or an interview, taking your outfit up a notch by adding something as simple as a cardigan or blazer can make a world of difference! It’s something simple that can really add a level of professionalism to an outfit.

We understand that workplace fashion can be difficult to navigate, but hopefully this post helped make your career navigation experience a little less spooky! We’re here for you at CareerZone in Market Hall from 10am-4pm from Monday to Friday or can be contacted via email at career@brocku.ca if you have any questions.
