Conducting a Successful Job Search

Are you a looking for summer employment, on-campus positions for the fall, or even an entry-level job? If the answer is yes, then you are most likely conducting a job search. Job searching can be exciting, but it also can be challenging due to confusing job requirements and/or application rejections. If you’re having difficulty with your job search, you have come to the right place! This blog will outline 5 easy strategies that you can use to overcome job search anxiety and find a path to success!

Strategy #1: Know Yourself

It is important to know what jobs are best suited for you based on your personal interests, goals, skills and values. Knowing yourself is the first step in your journey to navigate a successful career path. You can do this by deciding what type of job, you're looking for (full-time or part-time) and by completing career assessments (e.g., CareerCruising, Type Focus, ColourCode, Talentoday, etc.) to help you identify your skillset, values and interests. Our career assessments are accessible through your CareerZone portal!

Strategy #2: Be Prepared

Before you start your search, it is a great idea to log onto your CareerZone portal (i.e., careerzone.brocku.ca) to explore the available student resources on job searching and career documents. We have many quick-tips, job search website resources, and resources to help you construct a standout resume and cover letter. It is crucial to make sure these documents are tailored to each job that you apply to, and we Career Assistants are happy to help! You can have your resume and cover letter reviewed by us via email (career@brocku.ca) or via walk-in (hours are listed at the bottom).

Strategy #3: Research and Network

Another strategy to use when you are job searching is to research and network! Conducting research helps to generate better ideas, and networking allows you to form professional relationships. You can build your network through in-person events, career/employer directories, and social networking sites (i.e., LinkedIn) to find potential employers, uncover job leads, and connect with professionals in your field!

Strategy #4: Be Flexible

During your job search you want to ensure that you are considering alternate options in a similar work setting, or one that uses a similar skillset. It is best to create back-up plans because you might find something that you love which you never knew existed!

Strategy #5: Stay Positive and Focused!

We understand that finding a job is tiring and can take some time. However, it is very important to stay positive, persistent, and optimistic so you can navigate the application process with confidence!
