The New "Normal"- Preparing for the Upcoming School Year

As we move into the last weeks of summer, we are conscious that this school year will not be like others in the past. No one could have envisioned that our realities would shift so dramatically from “normal” in-person, day to day interactions with our peers to working from our kitchen tables or our bedroom desks. Taking classes from home will present a new set of challenges that students will have to work through, but we at CareerZone have put together several tips for making the best of our new “normal”:

1. Prepare for the day as if you are heading to campus. It may be tempting to work in your pjs, but dressing for success truly helps create a productive environment.

2. Create a reliable and realistic routine for the week- and then stick to it. Adjusting to your new schedule may take some time, but blocking off times for classes and school work will help you maintain a productive headspace and allow you to disconnect and recharge at the end of the day.

3. Set up a workspace dedicated to your classes and school work. Ensure that all of your required technology can function efficiently in the space. Although it may be tempting to work from your couch, maintaining a professional environment will help you focus throughout the day.

4. Set daily and weekly goals for yourself to help keep you on track. Celebrate your goals when you accomplish them. This will help you stay motivated.

Although the upcoming school year may seem overwhelming and unknown, you can make significant contributions to your classes and your future while learning remotely. Give yourself time to adjust to the new “normal” and take positive steps to stay productive. CareerZone services continue to be available virtually to all Brock students, and we look forward to working with you this year!
