I often hear the phrase "it looks good on a resume", from students who participant in volunteer opportunities and/or join clubs in order to make themselves stand out. Its a competitive market when finding jobs and as graduating students we want to as many opportunities to make ourselves known; to make ourselves different, showcase who we are, and what we have to offer.
So how can one stand out?
Jack McIsaac may suggest you to wear jeans and a red sweater, dye your hair beach blond, cut it short and style it with spikes- all to look like him. He stands out. He is known. Jack's one cool dude- but he's also a cartoon :)
To stand out, its all about showcasing your skills and accomplishments in order to set yourself apart from your competition.
Lia talked about Experience Plus on Tuesday, and questioned if you had yours? Experience Plus is an official Brock University document that shows employers, institutions and organizations that Brock has verified your experience, training and skills.
You can use your Experience Plus transcript when applying for grad school, to place in your portfolio and is a great document when applying for any scholarships, awards, and bursaries. This document allows employers to see your skills, workshops you've attended and is great for showcasing your volunteer experience.
You can also 'stand out' by dressing for success, having a tailored resume and cover letter and presenting yourself with confidence. For more information on showcasing yourself and making yourself known please stop by the Career Resource Centre where our Career Assistants would be more than happy to assist you.
How will you stand out?
